Collection of the Old Russian painting of the Russian Museum is one of the largest and most significant in Russia. It includes about six thousand icons. The permanent exhibition housed in the first four halls of Mikhailovsky Palace, represents a part of this collection - the most valuable works of XII - XVII centuries started in the major art centers of Old Russia: Novgorod, Pskov, Vladimir, Suzdal, Moscow and Yaroslavl.

The exhibition at the Russian Museum is aimed to present for the first time the complicated and multifaceted situation of the first decades of XX century. The exhibition will comprise around 100 artworks accompanied by the historical documents and literary materials by the poets and writers of that period.

The exhibition is dedicated to the 85th anniversary of Andrei Tarkovsky (1932–1986), famous Russian filmmaker and film director. A renowned master of cinema, Tarkovsky gained international recognition during his lifetime. He is considered the creator of a new language in cinematic art, having introduced new aesthetics and philosophy to it and influenced its further development.

The Russian Museum houses the biggest part of Rylov’s artistic heritage: paintings and sketches of various periods, graphic works, illustrations. This will allow to present all stages of his artistic development for the first time after his last personal exhibition in 1970.

Modern exhibition of the museum comprises items dating back to Peter I’s time, including memorial paraphernalia, such as: red broadcloth uniform, an oriental cane, a model of Peter I’s hand based on an imprint made at Lipetsk foundry in 1707, a wherry, and Peter’s armchair.
