Angels of the 20th and 21st Centuries

Natalia Goncharova. Archangel Michael. 1914. Colored lithograph
13 June 2019—19 August 2019
The word Angel means an invisible entity, an ethereal being, a messenger or a spirit, who in different religious traditions can have different names and appear in a different guise. The art of the twentieth century departs from the traditional interpretations of the image of the angel. The exhibition will trace the pictorial and semantic metamorphosis of the image of the angel in the works of artists, starting with the names of Nikolai Bruni, Victor Vasnetsov, Mikhail Nesterov, who created artworks for churches. The exhibition will show the way the invisible was reflected in fine arts, from modernism, symbolism, and avant-garde to the art of our contemporaries. The exhibition will include paintings, drawings, sculptures and decorative arts from the collection of the Russian Museum.
