My Own Self. Self-Portrait in the Russian Museum

My Own Self. Self-Portrait in the Russian Museum
29 June 2016—29 August 2016

The largest exhibition so far dedicated to the genre of self-portrait opened in the Russian Museum on 29 June.

The relevance of this genre in the context of contemporary culture increases with every generation. Self-portrait stands out like a mirror which reflects not only the personality of the author, but his perception of the artist’s role, the significance of art and its place in the life of contemporaries.

The exhibition comprises over 200 pieces of art from the Russian Museum collection among which are the best examples of the genre performed by the leading masters of Russian art. The exhibition provides a unique opportunity to trace the development of the self-portrait in the Russian painting, graphics and sculpture from the early XVIII century to the present day. Along with the masterpieces the works of less known artists aree on display, reflecting the very spirit of their time.
