The Russian Museum exhibition of artworks by Vera Ermolaeva presents the artist’s creative life that was very short, unfortunately.
Exposition contains circa 200 artworks from the collections of the Russian Museum, Saint-Petersburg Museum of Theatrical and Musical Arts, as well as private collections.
Vera Ermolaeva as the disciple and fellow-campaigner of Kazimir Malevich worked together with him in the Artistic and Practical Institute in Vitebsk from 1919 to 1922. She was the member of the UNOVIS group. Under the Malevich’s influence she was fascinated by the non-objective art and created the projects of supremacist wall-paintings for the public buildings in Vitebsk.
At the end of the 1920s – in the beginning of the 1930s landscapes, still-lifes and thematic series (“Village”, “Sportsmen”, “Boys”) appeared in her creative oeuvre.
During the lifetime Vera Ermolaeva had been creating book illustrations. She worked together with such prominent artists as Natan Altman, Yuri Annenkov, Nikolai Lapshin. Illustrations that were created by Vera Ermolaeva approximately for twenty books as well as the number of the lifetime books are included in the exposition.
In 1937 Ermolaeva was sentenced to be shot. The documents that describe the last tragic years of the artist’s life are presented on the exhibition.

The Russian Museum exhibition project Artists on War and Peace can be seen as a diptych comprised of two exhibitions: Images of Military Life in Russian Art of the 16th to 20th Centuries and Home and Family. Images of Peaceful Life. They explore two existential aspects of human life perceived as polar opposites. The first half of the diptych features scenes of everyday life during wartime, while the other focuses on the theme of the home and family as guardian of the moral values of the Russian people.
