The publication comes as a kind of "afterword" for the exhibition of the same title which was held in the Russian Museum in 2004 and introduces large-scale works of art form the Museum collection. It comprises articles, and illustrated catalogue with comprehensive annotations, and brief biographies of the artists. The introductory article discusses the role and meaning of the "large painting" phenomenon in the history of the Russian art. Two other articles are devoted to the large-scale works of the 2nd half of the 19th - 20th centuries from the Museum collection.
The reproductions feature exhibits showcased at the 2004 exhibition along with the works from the permanent display and the ones from museum funds that have never been exhibited before.
