This book serves as an introduction to the main movements in the development of engraving on metal in Russian art, from the moment of it emerged in Russia in the 1660s through the end of the 19th century. An annotated album of illustrations is preceded by three scholarly articles that cover different aspects of the process of the establishment and later function of this kind of art in Russian artistic culture over the course of three centuries. These are supplemented by information about the fundamental techniques of engraving on metal and short biographies of the artists.
