This book is dedicated to the image of birds and insects in both the art of the past and in contemporary art, from the work of the "classes of beasts and birds" at the Imperial Academy of Arts (1763-1795), which marked the beginning of the history of the animalistic genre in Russia, to works created at the beginning of the 21st century. The interpretation of forms and images of the natural world changed in line with prevailing styles and mentalities. The album of illustrations introduces works of fine art from museums and private collections and sets the stage for four scholarly articles that cover different aspects of the visual interpretations of "those who fly and crawl" in paintings, sculptures, prints, drawings and decorative and applied art, as well as in works created by representatives of contemporary art with the help of complex technology. These are supplemented by an index of the names of the artists who are represented in the book.
