The Portrait of Gavriil Derzhavin from Irkutsk in St Petersburg

This large painted portrait of Gavriil Derzhavin (1743–1816) normally graces the walls of the Irkutsk Art Museum. The label that comes with the portrait bears the painter’s name: Salvatore Tonci. In 2023, when the painting became available for study at the Russian Museum, the staff of the museum’s Department of Technological Research discovered a feature invisible to the human eye underneath the surface coat of paint. Depicting the head and arm of an angel, it matchedan image we find on a certain sketch by famous Russian painter Alexei Egorov.

The exhibition spotlights old Russian icons, wooden sculptures, personal sacred objects and jewellery created in various places and at different times, yet sharing the same theme. St George is one of the most highly venerated saints in Russia. His image is viewed as symbolic of Russian history. “St George and the Dragon” is the most frequently recurring subject in the Russian St George iconography.

On 26 May 2005 the Mineral Study in the Stroganov Palace was opened after restoration and recreation of interiors. The study was designed by Andrei Voronikhin in 1791-92. It was considered as one of the masterpieces of Russian architecture of the 18th century.
