Mikhail Shvartsman

М. Shvartsman. Doors of the Sky. 1988. The State Russian Museum
10 February 2018—26 August 2018
The exhibition is held at the Málaga branch

Mikhail Shvartsman (1926–1997) was a legendary figure for several generations of Russians. His works from the 1960s and 70s were known to a select few, not just because they were practically forbidden in Soviet times but also because the artist himself didn’t particularly strive for popularity. Though Shvartsman had only a small circle of pupils, he was held in regard by many of his contemporary colleagues as both thinker, artist and philosopher.

His deeply individual interpretation of the world, the mesmerizing force and depth of his thought and the absolute novelty of his visual language aroused unconditional respect. He saw his work as an alternative to not only Soviet mainstream art but also the conceptualism that was gaining ascendancy at the time. In it he saw the foundation for a new Grand Architectural Style, the term he used to refer to his artistic ideas.

When a new day arrived in Russia and all limitations and taboos in the world of art were lifted, Shvartsman’s work slowly came to light, first among connoisseurs and specialists of fine art. Revealed before them was a complex and subtle spiritual world expressed in a high style. From that moment on, Shvartsman’s art began receiving true recognition and broad access to museums and exhibition spaces.

Today the Russian Museum is showing Mikhail Shvartsman’s oeuvre to the Spanish public for the first time. This is a great responsibility, but also great is our belief that the artist’s work will find acceptance among Western viewers. The exhibition includes 13 works created by Shvatsman between the 1970s and the 1990s.

As the artist himself was fond of saying, "To understand my work requires very little: just faith and an open heart."

For the Glory of Russia. Entrepreneurs and Patrons in Russia in the 18th – Early 20th Centuries

6 June—5 August 2024

Merchants, the “third estate”, at that time, were the basis of Russia’s economic power. The Stroganovs, the Demidovs and other entrepreneurs sometimes established entire “empires” with their own settlements, roads and internal regulations. The richest merchants became nobles and patrons of the arts. The exhibition is unique, both in the themes it explores and in the works it presents.
