Scenes from everyday life are widely known to be one of the subject matters of painting and graphic art. In sculpture, however, one deals with this subject much less often. Nevertheless, the entire history of this genre in sculpture has known a great diversity in topics and style. Genre sculpture is akin to theater arts: it can communicate joy and suffering, satire and lyricism. The exhibition at the Russian Museum not only demonstrates a “cross-section of Russian life,” from the mid-19th century to the present day, but also unfolds a spectrum of styles and artists’ creative individualities in such a diverse and original art as sculpture. The best narrative works of plastic art will certainly resonate with the viewers due to the recognizability of life situations and human feelings and hopes.

The exhibition is supported by PAO Severstal, PAO Power MachinesNordgold company.

30 paintings from the life of Peter the Great

9 June 2022—9 August 2022

The exhibition “30 paintings from the life of Peter the Great” is taking place on the Field of Mars in Saint Petersburg. The project is a reconstruction of an exhibit that was held 150 years ago at the same location and is dedicated to the 350th anniversary of the first Russian emperor. Fourteen original paintings from the 1872 exhibition were discovered in the State Russian Museum’s funds. They were digitally restored and will be exhibited in the form of outstanding quality canvas prints. The honour to fill the gaps and create modern interpretations of the same historical subjects was granted to the students, alumni and professors of Saint-Petersburg Academy of Fine Arts.
