Russian Female Artists. Between Tradition and Avant-Garde

M. Bashkirtseva. Young Woman with Bouquet of Lilacs. 1881
26 february 2019—27 february 2020
The exhibition is held at the Malaga Branch of the Russian Museum.
The rapid modernization of Russian society at the beginning of the 20th century marked the beginning of women's integration into the areas that used to be assigned to men, primarily into culture. Today, the names of the “Amazons of the avant-garde”: Alexandra Exter, Natalia Goncharova, Olga Rozanova and others are widely known, and their contribution to the development of the new art cannot be minimized. But even in the earlier, less favorable times for women's emancipation, Russian art was enriched by the works of women artists: Maria Bashkirtseva, Anna Ostroumova-Lebedeva, and others barely familiar to the modern viewer. The exhibition from the collection of the Russian Museum presents the female version of the history of Russian art from the second half of the 18th century to the present day.
