Sasha Okun. Where Art Thou?

Sasha Okun. Man fighting a wasp off. 2016
27 June 2019—29 July 2019
Sasha Okun is a famous Jerusalem artist, a teacher at the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design, art historian, writer, journalist, author of novels, short stories, local history and cooking books.

Born in 1949 in Leningrad, as a child he studied painting at the legendary studio of S.D. Levin at the Palace of Pioneers. In 1971, he graduated from the Faculty of Industrial Design (1971) of the V.I. Mukhina School (now the Saint Petersburg Stieglitz State Academy of Art and Design). In the 1970s, he was a member of the Alef group, participated in the famous non-conformist exhibitions at the Gaza House of Culture and Nevsky House of Culture. In 1979, he repatriated to Israel.

The main theme of Okun's art is human physicality embodied in the materiality of painting. Okun is a talented narrator: he renders everyday scenes as parables, maintaining their natural vividness and boldness. Sometimes, he exaggerates physiological details to the point of grotesque, but at the same time, he is far from mocking his characters. On the contrary, Okun's painting is all about the glorification of vitality which exists in spite of any conventions and limitations.

The exhibition at the Russian Museum will feature 33 paintings by the artist.

The exhibition is held with the support of the Consulate General of the State of Israel in St. Petersburg.

30 paintings from the life of Peter the Great

9 June 2022—9 August 2022

The exhibition “30 paintings from the life of Peter the Great” is taking place on the Field of Mars in Saint Petersburg. The project is a reconstruction of an exhibit that was held 150 years ago at the same location and is dedicated to the 350th anniversary of the first Russian emperor. Fourteen original paintings from the 1872 exhibition were discovered in the State Russian Museum’s funds. They were digitally restored and will be exhibited in the form of outstanding quality canvas prints. The honour to fill the gaps and create modern interpretations of the same historical subjects was granted to the students, alumni and professors of Saint-Petersburg Academy of Fine Arts.
