Peter I (1672–1725) is one of the brightest figures in Russian history, the founder of the Russian Empire, who significantly strengthened Russia's position in the international arena and expanded the country's borders. The activities of Peter the Great, the state transformations he carried out, and his very personality during the lifetime became the subject of artistic reflection, finding expression in the works of painting, graphics, and sculpture. Outstanding Russian painters, sculptors, draftsmen, engravers, masters of applied arts repeatedly addressed to the image of Peter and his deeds (I. K. Aivazovsky, M. M. Antokolsky, A. N. Benois, K. P. Bryullov, I. E. Repin , V. I. Surikov, V. A. Serov and many others).
The exhibition dedicated to the celebration of the 350th anniversary of the birth of Peter the Great is a tribute to the memory of the emperor. It will allow to see how the image of Peter and the events associated with his biography were embodied in the Russian fine art during two centuries. The exposition will include about 150 works of the 18th - early 20th centuries from the collection of the Russian Museum, the Military Historical Museum of Artillery, Engineers and Signal Corps, the State Tretyakov Gallery, the State Historical Museum and from private collections.
The exhibition will possibly be extended. Information will be updated on the website and social media.
30 paintings from the life of Peter the Great
9 June 2022—9 August 2022
The exhibition “30 paintings from the life of Peter the Great” is taking place on the Field of Mars in Saint Petersburg. The project is a reconstruction of an exhibit that was held 150 years ago at the same location and is dedicated to the 350th anniversary of the first Russian emperor. Fourteen original paintings from the 1872 exhibition were discovered in the State Russian Museum’s funds. They were digitally restored and will be exhibited in the form of outstanding quality canvas prints. The honour to fill the gaps and create modern interpretations of the same historical subjects was granted to the students, alumni and professors of Saint-Petersburg Academy of Fine Arts.
