Vyacheslav Pakulin: Searching for the Style of an Era

Vyacheslav Pakulin. Nevsky Prospekt on 9 July 1945. 1945. Oil on canvas. State Russian Museum.
9 December 2021—11 April 2022

Vyacheslav Pakulin (1900-1951) - famous painter and graphic artist, a younger contemporary of K. Malevich and K. Petrov-Vodkin, friend and associate of A. Samokhvalov and A. Pakhomov, chairman of the famous Leningrad art association Circle of Artists (1926-1932). Pakulin, endowed with a unique, striking talent, in 1920s and 1930s was caught up by the search for a "great style", paying tribute to the common aspirations of many artists of the post-revolutionary period. Dozens of heartfelt landscapes painted by Pakulin during the hardest days of the Leningrad siege became later the creative chronicle of that time. Pakulin, painting a landscape on Nevsky Prospekt from life, was captured in the footage of the Leningrad Newsreel, filmed by cameraman Yefim Uchitel and included in the documentary epic "Leningrad in the Struggle". Later, the landscapes of the besieged Leningrad by Pakulin permanently participated in exhibitions of the Russian Museum dedicated to the Great Patriotic War and the Leningrad blockade.

Thanks to the efforts of the director V.A.Pushkarev, the widow of the artist M.A. Fedoricheva and daughter L.V.Pakulina the Russian Museum was fortunate enough to collect a unique collection of Pakulin's works - more than 200 pieces representing different periods of the artist's work: from works marked by the influence of the avant-garde of the 1910s - early 1920s, to landscapes executed in the spirit of impressionism and pictorial realism.

The first personal exhibition of Vyacheslav Pakulin in the Russian Museum is aimed to fully present his searches and discoveries in the field of painting, graphics and theatrical art. The exposition will include about 200 works from the collection of the Russian Museum, the Museum of the History of St. Petersburg, the St. Petersburg State Museum of Theater and Music, the Museum of St. Petersburg Art of the XX-XXI centuries, the Museum of Political History and private collections.

The exhibition is organized with the support of Igor Musakov, Elena Lisina and Alexander Saprykin.

30 paintings from the life of Peter the Great

9 June 2022—9 August 2022

The exhibition “30 paintings from the life of Peter the Great” is taking place on the Field of Mars in Saint Petersburg. The project is a reconstruction of an exhibit that was held 150 years ago at the same location and is dedicated to the 350th anniversary of the first Russian emperor. Fourteen original paintings from the 1872 exhibition were discovered in the State Russian Museum’s funds. They were digitally restored and will be exhibited in the form of outstanding quality canvas prints. The honour to fill the gaps and create modern interpretations of the same historical subjects was granted to the students, alumni and professors of Saint-Petersburg Academy of Fine Arts.
