Nicholas Roerich. In Search of Shambala

N. K. Roerich. Himalayas (ce-Covered Slopes). 1938
27 September 2019—1 March 2020
The exhibition is held at the Malaga Branch of the Russian Museum.

Nicholas Roerich (1874–1947) was an artist, archaeologist, traveler, writer, and public figure who left a sizable legacy of art and literature. The most common theme in his work — the influence of culture on religion and vice-versa — took shape quite early, in the first decade of the 20th century, and saw its most powerful expression in the 1920s and 1930s, a period during which he organized several expeditions to the Himalayas. There, Roerich the historian and philosopher searched for evidence of connections between various peoples and cultures. For the artist and many of his contemporaries, earthly civilizations and the Cosmos were also connected, having a common past and future. Roerich translated his ideas and worldview into articles and painted canvases, some of which will be shown by the Russian Museum in Málaga.
