The Great Karl. Works by Karl Bryullov and His School from the Collection of the Russian Museum

1 August 2018—1 January 2019

The State Russian Museum opens the first exhibition of works from its collection at the Primorye State Art Gallery in Vladivostok. Works by Karl Bryullov, one of the most notable Russian 19th-century artists, are at the core of the Museum’s collection. Large-scale historical paintings, ceremonial portraits, and monumental works earned him fame within literary and artistic circles. Even the imperial family admired paintings by the Great Karl.

Bryullov’s work combines solemnity of the classical form with the introspection of romanticism, a deep investigation of human personality, and a close interest in the dramatic collisions of history and contemporaneity. The exhibition, including over 50 paintings and drawings by Karl Bryullov and his school, demonstrates the tremendous impact that the Great Karl had made in the context of late romanticism.

6 June—5 August 2024

Merchants, the “third estate”, at that time, were the basis of Russia’s economic power. The Stroganovs, the Demidovs and other entrepreneurs sometimes established entire “empires” with their own settlements, roads and internal regulations. The richest merchants became nobles and patrons of the arts. The exhibition is unique, both in the themes it explores and in the works it presents.
