2nd Biennale of Historical and Archival Photography from Russian Museums and Archives

The exhibition presents the historic and archive photography of the midst of the 19th - first half of the 20th century in the wide thematic range and variety of artistic and technical peculiarities. The most valuable features of the exposition are the expressiveness and documental character of the fixation of true events and various phenomena of Russian culture. The Second Photobiennale of historical and archive photography is the panorama of Russian life that is very different in content and abundance. Here the documental shots of unknown photographers are presented alongside with the works of greatest Russian masters of this view of art and together they reconstruct the cultural, economical and political image of Russia.

The exposition acquaints the viewers with the very interesting and rich photo-collections from the collections of Russian museums and archives and also introduces these documents in the scientific use and put the questions of attribution of works, investigation of the history of photography, techniques and methods of photo-printing, and also enriches the notion of the fond of photographs in the Russian museums and archives.

The genre of political poster in the Russian art formed and developed in the first years after the Revolution of 1917. The exhibition at the Marble palace dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the Revolution presents a large-scale and impressing outlook of the birth and formation of the Soviet poster as a specific art genre on the example of the art works from the collection of the Russian Museum.
