The exhibition presents the historic and archive photography of the midst of the 19th - first half of the 20th century in the wide thematic range and variety of artistic and technical peculiarities. The most valuable features of the exposition are the expressiveness and documental character of the fixation of true events and various phenomena of Russian culture. The Second Photobiennale of historical and archive photography is the panorama of Russian life that is very different in content and abundance. Here the documental shots of unknown photographers are presented alongside with the works of greatest Russian masters of this view of art and together they reconstruct the cultural, economical and political image of Russia.

The exposition acquaints the viewers with the very interesting and rich photo-collections from the collections of Russian museums and archives and also introduces these documents in the scientific use and put the questions of attribution of works, investigation of the history of photography, techniques and methods of photo-printing, and also enriches the notion of the fond of photographs in the Russian museums and archives.

Merchants, the “third estate”, at that time, were the basis of Russia’s economic power. The Stroganovs, the Demidovs and other entrepreneurs sometimes established entire “empires” with their own settlements, roads and internal regulations. The richest merchants became nobles and patrons of the arts. The exhibition is unique, both in the themes it explores and in the works it presents.

Masterpieces from Taganrog Rescued at the Russian Museum

In July 2023, an explosion in the city centre of Taganrog damaged several artworks at the Golden Names of the Silver Age exhibition in the Taganrog Art Museum. The Russian Museum offered immediate support with the restoration of 22 art pieces. During the restoration, which lasted over 6 months, the staff of the Russian Museum not only eliminated the mechanical damage that the art objects had received at the time of the explosion, but also completely restored all 22 masterpieces, revealing their original appearance and artistic concept.
