Aviva Baal-Teshuva

28 November 2002—15 January 2003
Aviva Baal-Teshuva, an American artist, divides her time between New York and Paris, where she exhibits her work. She is a versatile artist with European influences. With her architectural formation, she decided years ago to devote her time and energy to paintings, gouaches, and collages, where she can express herself. Her paintings, gouaches and collages show her strong interest incorporating poetry into color, shape and form, which she masters. Her body of work is an Odyssey of changing styles, without losing her quality of sophistication. Her beautiful Utopian outlook of the future is reflected by the "cosmos" series, dealing with our planet in this changing world. Her collages depict the human condition with shapes and movement, while her gouaches with their luminous colors express the hope for an environment, with its impact on a better peaceful world. Ever since the 1970-s Aviva Baal-Teshuva has met and became friends with some of the major artists of the century. Among them were Sonia Delaunay, Giorgio de Chirico, Zoran Music, Joan Mitchell, Nam June Paik, Christo and Jeanne-Claude and many others. She has exhibited her work in New York, Aspen (Colorado) and Paris to enthusiastic reviews. Her works are collected in England, Italy, Canada, Israel, Germany and Switzerland, to mention a few. Michael F. Gibson, art critic of the International Herald Tribune, writes: "She paints out of the fullness of her heart, like others may sing... and one can only admire the surprising diversity of her abundant production". Gerard Xuriguera, the French critic, art historian and author, sees a "moving and shining ebullient vocabulary and a genuine happiness in creating and articulating life... she leads painting back to its historical duties: transmitting life". Art critic Ann Cremin observes: "an explosion of joy and celebration of color... with brilliant dots of light and flying shapes". Aviva Baal-Teshuva is happy to exhibit her work at the Marble Palace, the Ludwig Museum, at the State Russian Museum in St.-Petersburg, a city she admires very much.

For the Glory of Russia. Entrepreneurs and Patrons in Russia in the 18th – Early 20th Centuries

6 June—5 August 2024

Merchants, the “third estate”, at that time, were the basis of Russia’s economic power. The Stroganovs, the Demidovs and other entrepreneurs sometimes established entire “empires” with their own settlements, roads and internal regulations. The richest merchants became nobles and patrons of the arts. The exhibition is unique, both in the themes it explores and in the works it presents.

The Russian Museum offered immediate support with the restoration of 22 art pieces. During the restoration, which lasted over 6 months, the staff of the Russian Museum not only eliminated the mechanical damage that the art objects had received at the time of the explosion, but also completely restored all 22 masterpieces, revealing their original appearance and artistic concept.
