Edward Steinberg

7 July 2004—23 August 2004
Edward Steinberg was born in Moscow to the family of the poet, translator, and artist A. A. Steinberg, who was arrested shortly after in the wave of Stalin's repressions. In 1957-1961 Edward Steinberg lived with his family in Tarusa, where his father settled after being released from prison. The future artist helped his parents working in a piscatorial artel. He had no professional artistic education but studied painting on his own - made copies of works of classics, painted landscapes of Tarusa, still lives, and portraits. In 1962, he moved to Moscow and took active part in the movement of nonconformists. In 1970s Edward Steinberg created his own, personalized version of geometrical abstraction (so called "white period" or metageometry), where a plastic construction is seen as a consequence of a spiritual impulse. Using a set of elementary geometrical signs, the artist therefore enters a constant inner dialogue with Kazimir Malevich. Nowadays, Edward Steinberg works mainly in Paris, but also in Moscow and Tarusa. He has had more than 20 personal exhibitions. His works can be found in many museums of the world. A catalogue for the exhibition has been published.
