Ekatherina Savtchenko. Unity

This exhibition is a retrospective of Ekatherina Savtchenko's oeuvre for the sixteen-year period from 1989 to 2004. The show comprises some seventy works from private European and American collections, including thirty works of painting, seven sculptures, thirty photographs and two video installations. Ekatherina Savtchenko creates in such forms of art as painting, photo-based art, performance and video art. For more than a decade, she has actively participated in the international art process, holding exhibitions in various museums and galleries. The artist has her own fans, public and collectors. Ekatherina Savtchenko was born in St Petersburg. She graduated from a children's school of art with a diploma for best student. After studying at the Faculty of Mathematics of Leningrad University and the Ilya Repin Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture, she moved to Germany. She trained under A. R. Penck at the Academy of Fine Arts in Düsseldorf for four years. Ekatherina Savtchenko lives and works in Düsseldorf.

Merchants, the “third estate”, at that time, were the basis of Russia’s economic power. The Stroganovs, the Demidovs and other entrepreneurs sometimes established entire “empires” with their own settlements, roads and internal regulations. The richest merchants became nobles and patrons of the arts. The exhibition is unique, both in the themes it explores and in the works it presents.

In July 2023, an explosion in the city centre of Taganrog damaged several artworks at the Golden Names of the Silver Age exhibition in the Taganrog Art Museum. The Russian Museum offered immediate support with the restoration of 22 art pieces. During the restoration, which lasted over 6 months, the staff of the Russian Museum not only eliminated the mechanical damage that the art objects had received at the time of the explosion, but also completely restored all 22 masterpieces, revealing their original appearance and artistic concept.
