The State Russian Museum / The Marble Palace Gifts to the Russian Museum from Artists and Collectors. Selected Works. 1898–2019
Throughout the history of the Russian Museum the most important role in the forming of its collection belongs to the donors. Among them are artists, collectors and other people who care about art and its preservation. Since the 1980s, the Russian Museum has gratefully acknowledged the contribution of donors in new acquisitions exhibitions, annual reports, and publications. However, the museum has never shown to the viewers the artworks donated from the moment of its foundation till the end of the twentieth century, though they formed the core and glory of the collection of the first museum of national art in Russia.
To mark the 125th anniversary of the Russian Museum, such an exhibition will be shown in all of its palaces, bringing together items of different epochs and donors, including the imperial family (Alexander III, Nicholas II, Grand Dukes), famous patrons of the arts (M. K. Tenisheva, D. N. Tolstoy, V. N. Argutinsky-Dolgorukov and many others), artists (I. E. Repin, V. A. Serov, I. I. Shishkin, and others). The artworks will be shown in chronological order of their creation (from ancient icons to works of the twentieth century) in four palaces of the museum: in the St Michael's Castle, Marble Palace, Benois Wing of the Mikhailovsky Palace and in Stroganov Palace.
The Marble Palace displays works of 1960-1980s whose authors tend to work on the opposite side to official art. These are works by nonconformist artists (Ely Bielutin, Sergey Kovalsky, Tatiana Kerner, Oleg Tselkov, Vladimir Yankilevsky, Mikhail Shvartsman, Gleb Bogomolov, Vladimir Viderman, and others). The graphic section dedicated to the art of the second half of the 20th - early 21st century and represented by the works of Vladimir Bashlykov, Oleg Kudryashov, Latif Kazbekov and two great gifts that the museum has received in recent years from prominent masters of Soviet graphics (a collection of watercolors by Vera Matyukh presented by her son, and the legacy of Levon Ayrapetyants presented by his students). The sculpture collection of the 1990s-2010s introduces the works presented to the museum by the authors mostly in recent years (Sergey Karev, Marina Spivak, Irina Yaroshevich-Guseva, Vladimir Tsivin, Sergey Borisov, Alexander Kozhin, Daria Surovtseva, Mikhail Yedomsky, and others).
A significant section of the exhibition displays samples of Russian contemporary art of the late 20th - early 21st century. These works reflect the character of the Department of Contemporary art collection. Most of the works donated in recent years are shown for the first time; the smaller part consists of " fundamental" works which are often shown at the exhibitions of the Russian Museum. This section contains works by the "New Artists" association (Timur Novikov, Oleg Kotelnikov, and others), works that came as a gift from Marat Guelman, from large galleries or presented by the authors. These works are related to the aesthetics of contemporary art by Igor and Catherine Pestov, Vadim Grigoriev-Bashun, Tatiana Akhmetgalieva, Leonid Tse, Valery Grikovsky, Boguslav Horak, Kirill Koteshov, Alexander Shishkin-Hokusai, and many other artists.

The Light of Learning: Publishing and Educational Posters from the Collection of the Russian Museum

The exhibition features posters from the collection of the Russian Museum, relating to education in Russia in the first third of the twentieth century. The exposition includes about 120 works of agitation art of the widest thematic range - from narrow advertising in bookstores, publishing houses and libraries to large-scale propaganda of reading, getting knowledge and education.
