The exhibition in the Marble palace presents works by the prominent St Petersburg artist Oleg Yakhnin, master of the art of painting, graphics and book illustration. After graduating from the Academy of Arts - Ilya Repin State Academic Institute for Painting, Sculpture and Architecture in Leningrad he became well-known in Russia as well as abroad. Yakhnin's exhibition in the Russian Museum is his artistic report for 45 years of work; it includes around 150 paintings, watercolors, etchings and lithographs, made by the artist between late 1970-s and 2015. Oleg Yakhnin actively entered the artistic life of Leningrad in 1970-s with a series of colored linocuts, lithographs and drawings in large format on literary subjects. The Russian Museum exhibition includes pieces from the "Faust" cycle (1981) which brought the artist wide recognition, and also series of etchings executed in the two last decades: "Seven deadly sins" (2014), "Slavic mythological creatures" (2011), "Large codex" (1999-2003). The exhibition also comprises Yakhnin's book illustrations for "Vita Nova" publishing house, bookplates, unique book issues with artist's etchings, drawings for "Twenty Sonnets to Mary, Queen of Scots" by Joseph Brodsky from the collection of the Russian Museum. The painterly work of Oleg Yakhnin is filled with metaphors, symbols and literary connotations as well as his graphic works. The exhibition includes several paintings by Yakhnin - from those of his early period ("Great-grandfather Zakhar", 1983) to the newest ones ("Chimera" triptych, 2015).

Merchants, the “third estate”, at that time, were the basis of Russia’s economic power. The Stroganovs, the Demidovs and other entrepreneurs sometimes established entire “empires” with their own settlements, roads and internal regulations. The richest merchants became nobles and patrons of the arts. The exhibition is unique, both in the themes it explores and in the works it presents.
Masterpieces from Taganrog Rescued at the Russian Museum

In July 2023, an explosion in the city centre of Taganrog damaged several artworks at the Golden Names of the Silver Age exhibition in the Taganrog Art Museum. The Russian Museum offered immediate support with the restoration of 22 art pieces. During the restoration, which lasted over 6 months, the staff of the Russian Museum not only eliminated the mechanical damage that the art objects had received at the time of the explosion, but also completely restored all 22 masterpieces, revealing their original appearance and artistic concept.
