The State Russian Museum / The Marble Palace Portuguese Video Art at the Marble Palace. Casting Reality
From 2 July until 20 August 2018 the Marble Palace of the Russian Museum hosts an exhibition of Portuguese video art “Casting Reality.” The project features works by three artists: António Olaio, Ana Rito, and José Maçãs de Carvalho.
Each video is an attempt to capture the flow of time, convey the sensation of duration, and eventually create a new reality. Apart from video art, António Olaio (born 1963) works with painting and music, Ana Rito (born 1978) is a sculptor, while José Maçãs de Carvalho (born 1960) practices photography. Mixing media and genres is something all the exhibited works have in common.
António Olaio has worked in the genre of musical performance since the 1980s. In his videos, created in collaboration with musician Joan Toborda, he acts as an author, performer, and director. The work “My Own Moon” (2009) was filmed in one of the historical halls of the University of Coimbra (Portugal), where he teaches. The video is at the same time ironic and respectful towards university traditions.
Works by Ana Rito encourage the viewer to think about sculpture as an art form, its past and present. In the work “Le Mot et le Fantôme” (2015) a woman reads a text to a stone figure. In the film “Le Buste”, she turns into a statue to the sounds of Jean Cocteau’s voice reading his eponymous poem.
Videos by José Maçãs de Carvalho come from his project devoted to memory. Between 2010 and 2014, he worked on his doctoral thesis “Archive and Memory,” and his first exhibition on this subject took place in Coimbra in 2011. The film “Archive and Democracy” (2017) was shot in Hong Kong. It is focused on the antagonism between local citizens and immigrant community. The artist uses the effect of documentary cinema, presenting his own personal photo archive to the viewer.

Merchants, the “third estate”, at that time, were the basis of Russia’s economic power. The Stroganovs, the Demidovs and other entrepreneurs sometimes established entire “empires” with their own settlements, roads and internal regulations. The richest merchants became nobles and patrons of the arts. The exhibition is unique, both in the themes it explores and in the works it presents.
Masterpieces from Taganrog Rescued at the Russian Museum

In July 2023, an explosion in the city centre of Taganrog damaged several artworks at the Golden Names of the Silver Age exhibition in the Taganrog Art Museum. The Russian Museum offered immediate support with the restoration of 22 art pieces. During the restoration, which lasted over 6 months, the staff of the Russian Museum not only eliminated the mechanical damage that the art objects had received at the time of the explosion, but also completely restored all 22 masterpieces, revealing their original appearance and artistic concept.
