Reza Derakshani

Tree of life. 2010.
25 May 2016—1 August 2016

The Russian Museum presents a retrospective of works by the prominent contemporary Iranian artist Reza Derakshani. The first solo exhibition of the painter, musician and performance artist, widely known in his homeland as well as in Europe and the USA, took place in Tehran when the artist was nineteen. Since then Reza Derakshani has been represented in gallery shows and museum exhibitions all over the world. In his art, he explores the themes and techniques of traditional Persian art while reflecting upon the Italian colorist and American abstract expressionist traditions. This multifaceted cultural background creates an idiosyncratic artistic style through which the artist creates his own poetic and mythological reality filled with individual emotions and recollections.

Iranian art is soon to become the newest trend in contemporary art. By organizing this exhibition, the Russian Museum aims to be at the vanguard of the movement and bring the finest artists from the country to Russian and international audiences.

The exhibition is opening at 4 PM

For the Glory of Russia. Entrepreneurs and Patrons in Russia in the 18th – Early 20th Centuries

6 June—5 August 2024

Merchants, the “third estate”, at that time, were the basis of Russia’s economic power. The Stroganovs, the Demidovs and other entrepreneurs sometimes established entire “empires” with their own settlements, roads and internal regulations. The richest merchants became nobles and patrons of the arts. The exhibition is unique, both in the themes it explores and in the works it presents.
