Third photobiennale of historical and archival photography from the Russian museums and private collections
25 February 2016—11 May 2016

Photobiennale of historical and archival photography is a large-scale project aimed at the systematic presentation of the collections of Russian photography. Starting with the First Photobiennale of historical and archival photography which showed the pieces of 1860-1940-s from the most important collections of St. Petersburg and Moscow the project was later developed through the collaboration with museums of Russia, archives and individual art collectors. Such collections include a large amount of photographic documents little known to the public and even specialists; among such documents may be anonymous, non-professional and amateur photographs, but they are the true mirror of their time. The Third Photobiennale of historical and archival photography continues the tradition of presenting little-known photographs and contains pieces from nine museums and two private collections. The exhibition of historical and archival photography demonstrates images of the everyday life in Russia in 1860-1940-s - from the views of small provincial towns and church architecture to the intense construction in the early XX century Russia and disasters of the II World War, from the images of the soviet-time childhood to the works of the unknown avant-garde photographer. The exhibition includes around 200 pieces.
