PASTEL IN THE RUSSIAN ART OF THE XVIII - XX CENTURIES

J. Ort. The portrait of Empress Elizaveta Alekseevna. 1800. Cardboard, pastel. 54x45
17 December 2009—9 March 2010
The exhibitions of the works that were created in the technique of pastel (one of the most fragile and delicate from graphical and painting techniques) is the first in the history of the Russian Museum. The exposition illustrates its development from XVIII to XX centuries. It includes the works of art of the known Russian painters and foreign painters, who worked in Russia.
The exhibition is interesting from the artistic and iconographic point of view. Along with the established portraits of the Emperor Family representatives (Catherine II, Grand Duke Pavel Petrovich, Grand Duke Konstantin Pavlovich) there are presented rare iconographic portraits of the Emperor Alexander I, his wife Empress Elisaveta Alexeevna, portraits of the notable figures of the Russian culture, representatives of the intelligentsia, ethnic types (J. Kassel, A. Orlovsky).
The exhibition required extensive technical and restoration preparation. The major scientific work was made to identify the persons on the portraits, to specify the authors, to make the dating of the artworks.
The exhibition is organized with the support of the "British American Tobacco Russia". It is supplemented with a catalogue in English and in Russian.
