Three Centuries of Russian Drawing. Drawing and Watercolours in Russia. First half of the 19th century

27 October 2005—20 February 2006
Drawing and Watercolours in Russia. First Half of the 19th Century exhibition is the second exhibition of the Three Centuries of Russian Drawing project in the State Russian Museum. This is the first ever exhibition presenting one of the most brilliant periods in the history of national drawing in all its genre and technique diversity. Drawing has always been the most explicit and vivid form reflecting the stylistic quests of the artists of the first half of the 19th century artists, the collision of tendencies of Classicism and Romanticism. The exhibition comprises the works by such first-rate draughtsmen as Alexei Yegorov, Vasily Shebuyev, Orest Kiprensky, Carl Brullov and Fidelio Bruni as well as the works by less known and even forgotten artists ─ Alexeyev, Nikolai Argunov, Carl Collmannolman, Alexei Chernyshev and Vasily Sternberg. Sketches by renowned masters for pictorial and monumental compositions form a unique part of the exhibition. The majority of the compositions have never been realized. Many drawings and watercolours are exhibited for the first time. The exhibition is accompanied by two films based on the albums from the funds of the Drawing Department. The albums are presented at the exhibition. A catalogue for the exhibition has been published.
