The Art of 3D Graphics is the first international contest-exhibition of its kind to be held in Russia. For the first time, the best works from contemporary 3D artists and designers will be available to the public in the classical museum atmosphere of the Russian Museum’s Marble Palace in St Petersburg.
RENDER.RU: Evgenia Nikolayevna, please tell us where the idea of organizing such a unique exhibition came from.
Evgenia Petrova: Our museum is one of the largest Russian art structures in this country and abroad. We hold a huge number of exhibitions on widely varying themes. This one, which we consider quite timely, had been just floating around for some time. We decided to stop putting it off, and to make this original opportunity a gift for us and our visitors in this jubilee year (in 2020 the Russian Museum will celebrate its 125th anniversary – ed.). And, as we now know, we are the first art museum in Russia to make the idea a reality.
RENDER.RU: How was the idea of the exhibition met by the museum administration and staff?
Evgenia Petrova: There was support for the exhibition in the museum from the start. We understand that when we work on developing areas of the visual arts – those connected with computer technology, with more traditional art, or other types – we are supporting contemporary creative trends and are keeping pace with the times.
RENDER.RU: Just 8–10 years ago 3D graphics was not considered serious art. It was a tool, something that had no life past a private exhibition. What has changed since?
Evgenia Petrova: In just this relatively short period of time, 10 years, because of the developments in technology, electronics have become essential to the lives of many artists, relevant from the birth of the idea to the implementation of the artist’s concept. Some of them remain on the “beginner’s level” of making sketches, while others use the modern technology to go further and begin to work with the medium professionally, with their efforts displayed on the big screen and other visual platforms.
RENDER.RU: What are the objectives of such an exhibition? What are the hopes you have for this project? Can we begin speaking of a popularization of 3D graphics and its exit from the shadows?
Evgenia Petrova: We can now safely say that 3D graphics has become part of international visual art. But for the first time, individual artists, groups of artists, and multimedia companies are presenting their work in a state museum, moving beyond the limits of the internet and their computers. This is very important to Russian and international youth, who all know very well what 3D graphics are, while everyone who has a computer or cell phone is coming into contact with this art form on a regular basis. We are ready to popularize this art form in every way possible and to become pioneers of a sort in the museum world.
We invite participants to choose a theme for their participation in the contest, such as: Architecture, the Surrounding Environment, Characters, Transportation, the Animal World, Art, or Miscellaneous.
RENDER.RU: The exhibition will be preceded by a large international competition. Tell us about that, please.
Evgenia Petrova: The Russian Museum has proposed a contest, and we have been supported by our German partners. We will be implementing this project together, with help from such well-known international 3D graphics professionals as Ralph Huchtemann (RebusFarm), Jeff Mottle (CGarchitect), Manny Fragelus (CGSociety), Roman Tsapik (Render.ru), Vasilis Koutlis (VWArtclub), Arseny Korablyov (Teya Conceptor), and Zacharias Reinhardt (CGBoost).
RENDER.RU: What are the phases of the competition and how long will each last?
Evgenia Petrova: We anticipate that the contest, which has already been announced, will run until April 30, 2020. At the end, an international jury will decide the winners.
RENDER.RU: Where will the international contest take place? Are they any restrictions with respect to the artist’s country of origin?
Evgenia Petrova: In the autumn of 2020 we will exhibit the best works from the contest, spanning an entire floor of the Russian Museum’s Marble Palace.
We do not have any restrictions on which countries participants can come from, since every country has artists that work in 3D. The doors of the Marble Palace are open to all of them.
RENDER.RU: How does one take part in the contest?
Evgenia Petrova: To participate, simply register on our website and upload your work.
RENDER.RU: And what can the contest’s finalists expect?
Evgenia Petrova: First, of course, is recognition in the museum sphere. In addition to the catalogue of the participants’ works that will be prepared for the exhibition’s opening, the Russian Museum and its partners are preparing a series of prizes to award to the artists and their works as winners in the various categories.
