The exhibition is dedicated to the 85th anniversary of Andrei Tarkovsky (1932–1986), famous Russian filmmaker and film director. A renowned master of cinema, Tarkovsky gained international recognition during his lifetime. He is considered the creator of a new language in cinematic art, having introduced new aesthetics and philosophy to it and influenced its further development.

Mikhail Shvartsman (1926-1997) is one of the few Russian artists of the after-war period who are claimed equal to the masters of the avant-garde epoch. His fame created around him a myth that prostrates far beyond his actual biography and academic art historic research.
On 26 May 2005 the Mineral Study in the Stroganov Palace was opened after restoration and recreation of interiors. The study was designed by Andrei Voronikhin in 1791-92. It was considered as one of the masterpieces of Russian architecture of the 18th century.
The State Russian Museum possesses the largest collection of sculpture of the period from the eighteenth to early twentieth centuries in Russia. It began to take shape in 1897-1898 thanks to the re-location of the most famous works of national masters from the Hermitage and the Academy of Arts, and also from acquisitions from private owners. However, prior to 1917 this collection numbered only 184 exhibits. Today the museum holds more than 2,000 works of sculpture of this period.
