Photographic Postcards

Anna Bocharova. Demidov Bridge. 2006
16 May 2018—25 June 2018
The history of postcards dates back to the 1860s when it became possible and soon widely popular to mail a card without an envelope. In the late 19th century, photo studios began to appear, producing, among other things, images for postcards.

It became popular among European travelers to send short notes illustrated by landmark views. This trend reached Russia as well. In the mid-1890s, Saint Petersburg stores began to sell postcards with city views. During the Soviet period, such postcards were no less widespread. In Leningrad, they were manufactured by the state photographic enterprise Lenfotokhudozhnik.

In 2016, creative association Stereoskop revived the tradition of printing postcards with the views of St. Petersburg, having invited well-known local photographers to take part in the project Photographic Postcards. Each participant printed six photographs about the size of a postcard. Then, a drawing by artist Alexander Florensky was silk-printed on the reverse side of the original hand-crafted silver gelatin print. The series is a limited edition, with just 21 made with each photograph.

Each photographic postcard presents an original perspective on the iconic landmarks of St. Petersburg: from splendid panoramas and famous monuments to the rustling leaves of the Summer Garden and arrogant silence of contemporary buildings and industrial zones.
