The St. Petersburg Governorate in photographs from the 1860‒1910s from the collection of the Russian Museum

K. Schulz. Peterhof. Lower Park. 1876.
30 may 2019—19 august 2019
Many of the human-made and natural sights of the St. Petersburg Governorate repeatedly became the subject or the setting in the works of painting and graphic art. From the middle of the 19th century, they also appeared in photographs. Professional and amateur photographers used to shoot not only a variety of rural landscape views but also remarkable buildings and interiors, most of which have subsequently undergone significant changes or have not survived to date.

In the complex of photographs from the collection of the Russian Museum, the central place is occupied by images of architectural and park ensembles and the interior decoration of palaces (Petergof, Oranienbaum, Tsarskoe Selo, Pavlovsk, Gatchina). The exhibition includes works by Giovanni (Ivan) Bianchi, Alfred Lorens, Albert Felish, Karl Schulz, Vladimir Mashukov, Alexander Erzhemsky, Mikhail Riznikov, Lucian Gorodetsky, Fyodor Nikolaevsky, Karl Bulla, Alexander Kiryanov, Carbini Brothers and many others.

The exhibition also features postcards, which have been widely used in Russia since the end of the 1890s. In the first two decades of the 20th century, portable cameras, especially Kodak, became widespread as well, giving rise to amateur photography. Printed at home photographs of landscapes, everyday life events, country scenes, strolls through parks and forests, coastal dunes, and the shores of the Gulf of Finland were signed and carefully kept, typically, in family photo albums.

Original, diverse, and comprehensive, the collection of photographic records from the Russian Museum collection allows the modern viewer to gain a broad understanding of the image of the St. Petersburg Governorate of 1860–1910s.
