The Russian Museum in conjunction with the Sakhalin Art Museum presents the exhibition The World of Nivkh, which opens up the culture of one of the oldest indigenous people of the Russian North. The ethnic name nivkh means man, the one who lives in my village. The people of this small nationality are direct descendants of the ancient population of Sakhalin and the Lower Amur. The decorative and applied art of the Nivkh people has deep roots in folk art and keeps elements of local folklore, ornament and traditional color scale.

The sublime theme of unity of man and nature in works of Nivkh artists reflects the originality of creative heritage of this nationality.

 

The exhibition contains the items from the collections of the Sakhalin Art Museum,

Sakhalin Regional Museum, Okha Regional Studies Museum and Nogliki Regional Studies Museum.

The exhibition is dedicated to a hundred-year-old tradition of producing decorative “military plates” depicting imperial army uniforms. Besides plates, the exhibition includes drawings and lithographs that served as sources or preliminary studies for paintings by such famous artists of the “uniform” genre.
