The exhibition is devoted to the 140th anniversary of the birth of Nickolas Roerich, one of the most distinctive Russian artists of the turn of the 20th century as well as a writer, philosopher, archaeologist, public figure, and initiator of the International Pact of Protection of the Cultural Heritage ("The Roerich Pact").
The Russian Museum owns the largest collection of paintings by Roerich that numbers about 430 works that presents both Russian and foreign stages of his creative path. The exposition brings together about 300 paintings and graphic works (from the earliest ones, created during Roerich's study at the Imperial Academy of Arts and his membership in the World of Art group) from the collections of State Russian Museum, State Tretyakov Gallery, Peterhof State Museum Reserve and the Research Museum of the Russian Academy of Arts (Isaak I. Brodsky Apartment-Museum).
A significant entry of the exhibition is the Bogatyr Frieze suite including the Sadko painting that has been seldom displayed because of its large format. The significant stage of Nickolas Roerich's creative path after emigration from Russia in 1918 - works that he created in India in the 1930s - 1940s - will be also extensively presented.
