Three Petersburg Collections

N. I. Feshin. Portrait of Mademoiselle Podbelskaya. 1912. Collection of Kirill and Yulia Naumov
11 April 2019—10 June 2019
The history of collecting objects of art in Russia, interrupted after the October Revolution by the policy of nationalization, was basically revived after the World War II: artworks were found in second-hand stores and at the antique dealers’, exchanged with other collectors, received thanks to friendly ties of collectors with artists and their families. Now, when Russian collectors are already integrated into the global auction practice, it is especially interesting to look at the collections of Russian art that began to take shape forty or more years ago. What attracted private collectors? Is there a special Petersburg taste for the visual arts?

The exhibition will present paintings, graphics, sculpture, theatrical-decorative and applied arts, and numismatics from three private collections in St. Petersburg: the Paleev family, the Berezovsky family, and the Naumov family.

The exhibition will present virtually unknown works by the most prominent Russian artists of the 19th and 20th centuries and many other significant objects of Russian art, such as engravings and sets of commemorative medals dating back to the 18th and 19th centuries. The exhibition includes more than 400 works by I. K. Aivazovsky, N. I. Altman, L. S. Bakst, A. N. Benois, I. Ya. Bilibin, K. F. Bogaevsky, M. A. Vrubel, N. S. Goncharova, A. Ya. Golovin, B. D.
