Contemporary Photography

The Russian Museum department of contemporary photography was established in 2010. Its work was aimed at filling the gaps in the photographic legacy of the Soviet period and forming a collection of works by contemporary photographers. From the time of department opening about 1500 works were acquired to its collection.

Details

The department collection has been replenished by donations from artists and by today has acquired photographic works from the 1960s to the 2000s. Particularly worth mentioning are photos by Vladimir Sychev, active participant of the alternative art movement of the 1970s, Rustam Mukhametzianov, representing the “Tasma” group of photographers (“Kazan School”); Mikhail Shemyakin and Moscow photographer Oleg Kaplin.

Artists from St. Petersburg are fully represented in the collection — and not only photographers (Aleksandr Petrosyan, Dmitry Provotorov, Alla Poletaeva, Alya Esipovich, Arnold Mariashin, Stanislav Khvalin, Valeriy Aksyonov and many others), but also artists for whom photography is not the only form of creative expression. Many of them, in addition to photos, work both in the traditional techniques of drawing, painting, sculpture, and in the field of found objects and installations (Vadim Grigoriev-Bashun, Semyon Motolyanets, Azamat Czeslaw, Nadezhda Anfalova).

From 2009 the Russian Museum has held the Biennial of Contemporary Photography. These regular exhibitions allow to expand the geography of the collection and to augment it with the works of photographers not only from St. Petersburg and Moscow, but also of those living and working in different cities of Russia.
