The publication is timed to the opening of a new permanent exhibition in the Russian Museum. The book includes the album of illustrations supplemented with detailed annotations and catalogue information for each of the works presented, a research article that studies the history of the portrait gallery project and acquaints the reader with various forms of collecting and studying portraits in pre-revolutionary Russia, as well as with the fates of portrait collections after 1917. The album of illustrations presenting paintings and sculptural works consists of two sections, one of which is dedicated to portraits created before 1917 while the other one presents works by Soviet artists. The publication is supplemented with biographies of artists and an index of persons depicted in the portraits.
