The publication timed to the 1150th anniversary of the Russian statehood acquaints the reader with the Russian history events reflected in national art from the time of Rurick to Tsar Alexis Mikhailovich's ruling. It includes an article that researches the image interpretation of the events and characters of Russia before the rule of Peter the Great in painting, sculpture and graphics of the second half of the 18th - mid-20th centuries from the collection of the Russian Museum. The voluminous album of illustrations includes detailed annotations. The publication is supplemented with an index of artists and biographies.
