This book serves as an introduction to the history of Russian relief from the moment it emerged in the art of Peter the Great's time through present day, using the works in the collection of the Russian Museum as examples. The album of illustrations is preceded by three scholarly articles dedicated to the two stages in the development of the relief in the context of Russian culture (18th-early 20^th century and the Soviet era), and the history of the existence of the relief on medals and coins in Russia. These are supplemented by biographies of the sculptors represented in the book, and by an index of persons depicted in the reliefs.
