Russian Art of the Second Half of the XIX Century
Permanent exhibition
Even when it first opened back in 1898, the Russian Museum owned many canvases painted by such masters of the second half of the nineteenth century as Ivan Aivazovsky, Konstantin Makovsky, Ilya Repin, Vasily Polenov and Vasily Surikov. Although the selection of works before the revolution was often hampered by the conservative tastes of museum officialdom, the collection nevertheless grew in breadth thanks to the efforts of Alexander Benois, Albert Benois, Igor Grabar and Pyotr Neradovsky.

The exhibition spotlights old Russian icons, wooden sculptures, personal sacred objects and jewellery created in various places and at different times, yet sharing the same theme. St George is one of the most highly venerated saints in Russia. His image is viewed as symbolic of Russian history. “St George and the Dragon” is the most frequently recurring subject in the Russian St George iconography.

Celebrating the 130th anniversary of Nicholas Roerich's birth, this jubilee exhibition showcases 66 works of painting from the collection of the Russian Museum.
Permanent exhibition
On 26 May 2005 the Mineral Study in the Stroganov Palace was opened after restoration and recreation of interiors. The study was designed by Andrei Voronikhin in 1791-92. It was considered as one of the masterpieces of Russian architecture of the 18th century.

This exhibition celebrates 150 years since the birth of Konstantin Fyodorovich Bogayevsky (1872–1943), one of the most prominent artists of Russia’s Silver Age. A pupil of Ivan Aivazovsky, Ivan Shishkin and Arkhip Kuindzhi, Bogayevsky graduated from the Imperial Academy of Arts in 1897, commencing his career at a crucial juncture in the history of Russian art.

Belsky brothers (Ivan (1719-1799), Alexey (1729-1796) and Efim (1730-1778)) were the greatest masters of the painting team of The Chancellery (later The Office) of buildings of Her Imperial Majesty. For more than half a century they performed the most responsible painting work commissioned by Empresses Elizabeth and Catherine the Great.

January 2020 marks the 200th anniversary of Antarctica discovery by Russian navigators F. F. Bellingshausen and M. P. Lazarev. The exhibition timed to coincide with the Year of Antarctica in Russia presents about 100 works of painting, graphics, sculpture, numismatics, decorative-applied and folk art from the collection of The State Russian Museum. The core of the exhibition is formed by sections devoted to the discovery of Antarctica and the exploration of the Arctic by Russian travelers, sailors, and scientists.
Valaam: 200 years in Russian Painting

The State Russian Museum presents the exhibition project Parallel Universes. From Abstraction to Artefact showing works by 36 artists of the second half of the 20th century from the collection of Natalia Opaleva, a well-known collector, founder and general director of the AZ Museum (Anatoly Zverev). The exhibition introduces visitors of the Marble Palace to more than 200 paintings and graphic works by underground masters of the 1960s–1980s: Anatoly Zverev, Dmitri Plavinsky, Dmitry Krasnopevtsev, Oleg Tselkov, Lidia Masterkova and Ernst Neizvestny.
