Portrait of a Young Man in a Green Caftan by Ivan Nikitin

When in 1897 the Emperor Alexander III Russian Museum received the painting Portrait of a Young Man in a Green Caftan (late 1720s – before August 8, 1732) as a donation from the art collection of Prince Alexei Lobanov-Rostovsky, it was deemed to be an early 18th-century painting by an anonymous artist. The remarkable portrait was later thought to have possibly come from the hand of Ivan Nikitin, but sufficient evidence to prove that came to light only as recently as the mid-2010s, in the findings of a multidisciplinary study and thorough restoration.

The exhibition dedicated to the 350th anniversary of the birth of the first Russian Emperor Peter the Great will feature works by B.M. Kustodiev and M.V. Dobuzhinsky, connected with the decoration of the Great City College House named after Peter the Great in St. Petersburg (1910-1911).
To See the Invisible... for the 50th Anniversary of the Department of Technological Research

The title of the exhibition dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the Department of Technological Research reflects the essence of its work: to study what, how, when and by whom certain works were created. The exposition gives an idea of what results such research methods as microscopy, radiography, study in the infrared and ultraviolet regions of the spectrum, X-ray fluorescence analysis can bring.

The main goal of the exhibition is to present the local features of patchwork in numerous centers of folk art in Russia and to show the original creative style of individual masters of the 20th century. The exhibition introduces the viewer to the truly folk patchwork, which was developed not in creative units and clubs, but in the villages and small towns of Russia.

The Biennale of Historical and Archival Photography once again presents inaccessible photo collections of regional museums. The exhibition will show 144 photographs from museums in Voronezh, Ivangorod, Nizhny Novgorod, Rybinsk, Ryazan, Simferopol, Omsk, Pskov, Uglich, Yakutsk. The exposition is structured as a consistent story about the cultural, everyday and political life of Russia in the 1870s - 1930s.
Pavel Stroganov: Italian Journey

Count Pavel Sergeevich Stroganov (1823-1911), traveling with his family in Italy in 1839-1841, captured the image of this country in numerous drawings, which were considered the works of an unknown master until recently. At the exhibition in the halls of the palace that belonged to the Stroganovs, the Russian Museum will show 60 wonderful drawings from its collection for the first time and comment in a multimedia show how their research was carried out, which made it possible to prove the authorship of Count Pavel Stroganov.

Belsky brothers (Ivan (1719-1799), Alexey (1729-1796) and Efim (1730-1778)) were the greatest masters of the painting team of The Chancellery (later The Office) of buildings of Her Imperial Majesty. For more than half a century they performed the most responsible painting work commissioned by Empresses Elizabeth and Catherine the Great.

January 2020 marks the 200th anniversary of Antarctica discovery by Russian navigators F. F. Bellingshausen and M. P. Lazarev. The exhibition timed to coincide with the Year of Antarctica in Russia presents about 100 works of painting, graphics, sculpture, numismatics, decorative-applied and folk art from the collection of The State Russian Museum. The core of the exhibition is formed by sections devoted to the discovery of Antarctica and the exploration of the Arctic by Russian travelers, sailors, and scientists.
Valaam: 200 years in Russian Painting

The exhibition for the first time unites the valuable collection of paintings of the New Valaam Monastery (Finland) and works from the Valaam Monastery (Russia). Works on Valaam theme from the State Russian Museum and private collections are also part of the exhibit of more than 70 works.

This exhibition of works by People’s Artist of the Russian Federation and Head of the Academic Painting Faculty of the Moscow State Stroganov Academy of Art and Industry Evgeny Romashko is timed to coincide with the artist’s 60th birthday. Igor Tcholaria. Taming the Chaos

Taming the Chaos, a solo exhibition of the work of Igor Tcholaria, numbers some 60 paintings, graphic artworks and sculptures. Igor Tcholaria was born in Abkhazia, which stretches along the coast of the Black Sea. He received his basic grounding in art at the Sukhumi Art School, and subsequently continued his education in Leningrad, at the Vera Mukhina School and the Academy of Arts.

This exhibition will introduce viewers to the furniture preserved in the Russian Museum, a collection the public is not very familiar with. What does an empty chair mean? A synthesis of painting, graphic art, sculpture, applied art, and design, the Russian Museum’s exhibition stimulates ideas on these questions and more.

Modern exhibition of the museum comprises items dating back to Peter I’s time, including memorial paraphernalia, such as: red broadcloth uniform, an oriental cane, a model of Peter I’s hand based on an imprint made at Lipetsk foundry in 1707, a wherry, and Peter’s armchair.

The creative tandem of brothers Alexander and Valery Traugot does not need a special introduction. It became a truly significant phenomenon in the artistic life of post-war Leningrad, and a huge number of book illustrations signed with the memorable triple initial “G.A.V.” together represents one of the brightest pages in the history of the Soviet post-war art of the book.
