This large painted portrait of Gavriil Derzhavin (1743–1816) normally graces the walls of the Irkutsk Art Museum. The label that comes with the portrait bears the painter’s name: Salvatore Tonci. In 2023, when the painting became available for study at the Russian Museum, the staff of the museum’s Department of Technological Research discovered a feature invisible to the human eye underneath the surface coat of paint. Depicting the head and arm of an angel, it matchedan image we find on a certain sketch by famous Russian painter Alexei Egorov.

The exhibition presents over 120 paintings and graphic works by Surikov from the museums in St Petersburg, Moscow and Krasnoyarsk, including the famous historical paintings Yermak Conquering Siberia, Taking a Snow Town, Suvorov Crossing the Alps, Stepan Razin, Boyarynya Morozova (Tretyakov Gallery) and Menshikov in Beryozovo (Tretyakov Gallery), portraits, paintings on religious subjects, watercolours and fine examples of book illustrations.

The Biennale of Historical and Archival Photography once again presents inaccessible photo collections of regional museums. The exhibition will show 144 photographs from museums in Voronezh, Ivangorod, Nizhny Novgorod, Rybinsk, Ryazan, Simferopol, Omsk, Pskov, Uglich, Yakutsk. The exposition is structured as a consistent story about the cultural, everyday and political life of Russia in the 1870s - 1930s.

Count Pavel Sergeevich Stroganov (1823-1911), traveling with his family in Italy in 1839-1841, captured the image of this country in numerous drawings, which were considered the works of an unknown master until recently. At the exhibition in the halls of the palace that belonged to the Stroganovs, the Russian Museum will show 60 wonderful drawings from its collection for the first time and comment in a multimedia show how their research was carried out, which made it possible to prove the authorship of Count Pavel Stroganov.
