Russian Art of the Second Half of the XIX Century
Permanent exhibition
Even when it first opened back in 1898, the Russian Museum owned many canvases painted by such masters of the second half of the nineteenth century as Ivan Aivazovsky, Konstantin Makovsky, Ilya Repin, Vasily Polenov and Vasily Surikov. Although the selection of works before the revolution was often hampered by the conservative tastes of museum officialdom, the collection nevertheless grew in breadth thanks to the efforts of Alexander Benois, Albert Benois, Igor Grabar and Pyotr Neradovsky.

The exhibition spotlights old Russian icons, wooden sculptures, personal sacred objects and jewellery created in various places and at different times, yet sharing the same theme. St George is one of the most highly venerated saints in Russia. His image is viewed as symbolic of Russian history. “St George and the Dragon” is the most frequently recurring subject in the Russian St George iconography.
Portrait of a Young Man in a Green Caftan by Ivan Nikitin

When in 1897 the Emperor Alexander III Russian Museum received the painting Portrait of a Young Man in a Green Caftan (late 1720s – before August 8, 1732) as a donation from the art collection of Prince Alexei Lobanov-Rostovsky, it was deemed to be an early 18th-century painting by an anonymous artist. The remarkable portrait was later thought to have possibly come from the hand of Ivan Nikitin, but sufficient evidence to prove that came to light only as recently as the mid-2010s, in the findings of a multidisciplinary study and thorough restoration.

The ARCHIVEryimportant Avant-Garde exhibition reflects almost all stages and trends in the history of Russian Avant-Garde from the first Futuristic experiments of David Burliuk, Kirill Zdanevich, Elena Guro, Olga Rozanova and Alexei Kruchenykh to retrospective return to the creative experience of the 1910s in the latest drawings of the poet and artist Vasily Kamensky.

Permanent exhibition
On 26 May 2005 the Mineral Study in the Stroganov Palace was opened after restoration and recreation of interiors. The study was designed by Andrei Voronikhin in 1791-92. It was considered as one of the masterpieces of Russian architecture of the 18th century.

The main goal of the exhibition is to present the local features of patchwork in numerous centers of folk art in Russia and to show the original creative style of individual masters of the 20th century. The exhibition introduces the viewer to the truly folk patchwork, which was developed not in creative units and clubs, but in the villages and small towns of Russia.

Mikhail Makhayev’s St Petersburg

The sketches and drawings of Mikhail Makhayev (1717–1770), the great Russian 18th-century veduta master, are the only way we have of appreciating St Petersburg’s stately appearance during the mid-18th century. The exhibition features approximately 100 works: Mikhail Makhayev’s drawings, engravings, and paintings made from his drawings by Russian and Western European artists, as well as the engraved copper plates used to print St Petersburg city views in the mid-18th century.
Naum Mogilevsky. Sculptures and Drawings

Naum Mogilevsky was one of the most outstanding artists of the circle that gravitated around the great sculptor and artistic mentor Alexander Matveyev. And yet his work has received very little scholarly attention and is practically unknown to many art lovers. This exhibition, including approximately 30 sculptures and 40 drawings, invites the audience to rediscover a forgotten master and explore the many facets of his talent.

This exhibition of works by People’s Artist of the Russian Federation and Head of the Academic Painting Faculty of the Moscow State Stroganov Academy of Art and Industry Evgeny Romashko is timed to coincide with the artist’s 60th birthday. Igor Tcholaria. Taming the Chaos

Taming the Chaos, a solo exhibition of the work of Igor Tcholaria, numbers some 60 paintings, graphic artworks and sculptures. Igor Tcholaria was born in Abkhazia, which stretches along the coast of the Black Sea. He received his basic grounding in art at the Sukhumi Art School, and subsequently continued his education in Leningrad, at the Vera Mukhina School and the Academy of Arts.

This exhibition will introduce viewers to the furniture preserved in the Russian Museum, a collection the public is not very familiar with. It will also open up a new perspective on well-known Russian works of art. What kinds of chairs exist? What are they made of? What do people do while seated? What poses do they adopt? What does an empty chair mean? A synthesis of painting, graphic art, sculpture, applied art, and design, the Russian Museum’s exhibition stimulates ideas on these questions and more.
