Russian Art of the Second Half of the XIX Century
Permanent exhibition
Even when it first opened back in 1898, the Russian Museum owned many canvases painted by such masters of the second half of the nineteenth century as Ivan Aivazovsky, Konstantin Makovsky, Ilya Repin, Vasily Polenov and Vasily Surikov. Although the selection of works before the revolution was often hampered by the conservative tastes of museum officialdom, the collection nevertheless grew in breadth thanks to the efforts of Alexander Benois, Albert Benois, Igor Grabar and Pyotr Neradovsky.

His image is viewed as symbolic of Russian history. “St George and the Dragon” is the most frequently recurring subject in the Russian St George iconography.

The F.M.Dostoevsky Literary-Memorial Museum presents an exhibition to the 200th anniversary of the writer.
The exhibition is based on paintings from the imaginary "ideal museum of the writer", which were especially significant for Dostoevsky throughout his life. He did not miss a single exhibition in St. Petersburg, in Europe he got acquainted with the main museums and galleries, he knew the Dresden Gallery, the Pitti Palace, the Uffizi almost by heart. He considered Raphael's Sistine Madonna one of the greatest masterpieces, admired the landscapes of Claude Lorrain, the gates of the Florentine Baptistery, Saint Agatha by Sebastiano del Piombo, Penitent Magdalene by Batoni, this list is pretty extensive.
On the history of the St. Michael’s castle

St. Michael’s Castle is an outstanding monument of history and architecture of the turn of the 18th - 19th centuries. The building, erected at the will and under the direct supervision of Emperor Pavel I, had a difficult fate. The exposition "On the history of the St. Michael’s Castle", which is offered to the attention of visitors, makes it possible to see the research of the monument building, restoration and museification being carried out.

The exhibition was prepared for the 200th anniversary of one of the most famous and frequently cited Russian writers - Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoevsky (1821-1881).
His training at the Engineering School (in the 1840s), located in the Mikhailovsky (Engineering) Castle (now a branch of the Russian Museum), is an excellent occasion for the Russian Museum to pay tribute to the memory of one of the authors of the Petersburg myth by presenting an exposition of works from the museum collection in honor of this anniversary.
