Ancient Art of XIV-XVII Centuries
Permanent exhibition
Collection of the Old Russian painting of the Russian Museum is one of the largest and most significant in Russia. It includes around six thousand icons. The permanent exhibition housed in the first four halls of Mikhailovsky Palace represents a part of this collection, the most valuable works of XII-XVII centuries created in the major art centers of Old Russia: Novgorod, Pskov, Vladimir, Suzdal, Moscow, and Yaroslavl.
Russian Art of the XVIII Century
Permanent exhibition
The exposition of Russian art of XVIII century is chronologically organized and presents the main stages and trends of Russian art of this time. One part of the display is dedicated to the time of Peter I and focuses mainly on the names of Ivan Nikitin and Andrei Matveyev, the greatest portraitists and leaders of the secular Russian art of this time. Genre of portrait of the middle and second part of XVIII century is presented by such artists as Ivan Vishyakov, Alexey Antropov, Ivan Argunov, Fyodor Rokotov.
Russian Art of the First Half of the XIX Century
Permanent exhibition
The exhibition shows masterpieces representing the variety of trends in the Russian art of the time (classicism, romantism and beginning in the second third of the XIX century realism). The works by academic school masters are also widely represented: the canvases by Karl Brullov (the famous «The Last Days of Pompeii», religious compositions and portraits of the artist’s contemporaries), historical paintings by Grigory Ugryumov, Alexander Ivanov, Alexey Egorov, Fyodor Bruni.

Pavel Kuznetsov (1878–1968) is one of the most famous artists of the early 20th century. He was a student of Valentin Serov and Konstantin Korovin, and a prominent representative of the Blue Rose art association. The exhibition presents paintings and graphic works by Pavel Kuznetsov from the Russian Museum and private collections.

This exhibition is dedicated to Russian Neoclassicism, an early 20th-century art trend that, alongside avant-garde, was influential in shaping Russian architecture, theatre, music, fashion and everyday life, as well as the figurative arts.
Permanent exhibition
On 26 May 2005 the Mineral Study in the Stroganov Palace was opened after restoration and recreation of interiors. The study was designed by Andrei Voronikhin in 1791-92. It was considered as one of the masterpieces of Russian architecture of the 18th century.

This is the first ever large-scale exhibition held in the Russian Museum to address the genius of Russian and world culture, whose anniversary will be an international event. The museum rich depositories enable to characterize the oeuvre of the great writer most fully and diversely and to reconstruct the cultural and historical background, which witnessed the formation and heyday of Pushkin’s unique talent.

To the shores of Antarctica and Arctica. To the 200th anniversary of Antarctica discovery

January 2020 marks the 200th anniversary of Antarctica discovery by Russian navigators F. F. Bellingshausen and M. P. Lazarev. The exhibition timed to coincide with the Year of Antarctica in Russia presents about 100 works of painting, graphics, sculpture, numismatics, decorative-applied and folk art from the collection of The State Russian Museum. The core of the exhibition is formed by sections devoted to the discovery of Antarctica and the exploration of the Arctic by Russian travelers, sailors, and scientists.
Valaam: 200 years in Russian Painting

The exhibition for the first time unites the valuable collection of paintings of the New Valaam Monastery (Finland) and works from the Valaam Monastery (Russia). Works on Valaam theme from the State Russian Museum and private collections are also part of the exhibit of more than 70 works.

The exhibition introduces visitors of the Marble Palace to more than 200 paintings and graphic works by underground masters of the 1960s–1980s: Anatoly Zverev, Dmitri Plavinsky, Dmitry Krasnopevtsev, Oleg Tselkov, Lidia Masterkova and Ernst Neizvestny.
