Russian Art of the Second Half of the XIX Century
Permanent exhibition
Even when it first opened back in 1898, the Russian Museum owned many canvases painted by such masters of the second half of the nineteenth century as Ivan Aivazovsky, Konstantin Makovsky, Ilya Repin, Vasily Polenov and Vasily Surikov. Although the selection of works before the revolution was often hampered by the conservative tastes of museum officialdom, the collection nevertheless grew in breadth thanks to the efforts of Alexander Benois, Albert Benois, Igor Grabar and Pyotr Neradovsky.
Mstislav Farmakovsky. 150th Anniversary of the Artist’s Birth

The exhibition is dedicated to the 150th anniversary of Mstislav Farmakovsky, an artist and chief curator at the State Russian Museum. The show opens up the art of this brilliant master of the Silver Age for the first time ever and pays tribute to the memory of the Russian Museum's outstanding employee.

Maxim Vorobyov (1787–1855) is the greatest master of the national landscape school of the first half of the 19th century. The exhibition features drawings and watercolours by the artist and his students including Sokrat Vorobyov (1817–1888), Mikhail Lebedev (1811–1837), Vasily Sternberg (1818–1845), Mikhail Elson (1816–1857), Nikanor Chernetsov (1805–1879), Vasily Sadovnikov (1800–1879).

The exhibition is devoted to the most impressive and spectacular natural events depicted in the paintings of Russian artists. The exhibition will include paintings of artists of the XIX-XX centuries from the collection of the Russian Museum such as I. Aivazovsky, A. Savrasov, F. Vasilyev, A. Kuindzhi, I. Levitan, N. Dubovskoy, K. Redko, M. Vorobyov, and others.

The exhibition displays the works of Nicholas Roerich (1874-1947) - a world-famous artist, one of the leading masters of Russian art of the first half of the 20th century. The exhibition will feature about 80 paintings from the Russian Museum collection, as well as several graphic works.

Permanent exhibition
On 26 May 2005 the Mineral Study in the Stroganov Palace was opened after restoration and recreation of interiors. The study was designed by Andrei Voronikhin in 1791-92. It was considered as one of the masterpieces of Russian architecture of the 18th century.

This is the first ever large-scale exhibition held in the Russian Museum to address the genius of Russian and world culture, whose anniversary will be an international event. The museum rich depositories enable to characterize the oeuvre of the great writer most fully and diversely and to reconstruct the cultural and historical background, which witnessed the formation and heyday of Pushkin’s unique talent.
Military Parades: Porcelain and Watercolour

The exhibition is dedicated to a hundred-year-old tradition of producing decorative “military plates” depicting imperial army uniforms. Besides plates, the exhibition includes drawings and lithographs that served as sources or preliminary studies for paintings by such famous artists of the “uniform” genre.

Special mention is made of Alexander III's merits in museum construction and art education, which was due to his undoubted passion for history and fine arts.

Belsky brothers (Ivan (1719-1799), Alexey (1729-1796) and Efim (1730-1778)) were the greatest masters of the painting team of The Chancellery (later The Office) of buildings of Her Imperial Majesty. From Abstraction to Artefact showing works by 36 artists of the second half of the 20th century from the collection of Natalia Opaleva, a well-known collector, founder and general director of the AZ Museum (Anatoly Zverev). The exhibition introduces visitors of the Marble Palace to more than 200 paintings and graphic works by underground masters of the 1960s–1980s: Anatoly Zverev, Dmitri Plavinsky, Dmitry Krasnopevtsev, Oleg Tselkov, Lidia Masterkova and Ernst Neizvestny.
