Ancient Art of XIV-XVII Centuries
Permanent exhibition
Collection of the Old Russian painting of the Russian Museum is one of the largest and most significant in Russia. It includes around six thousand icons. The permanent exhibition housed in the first four halls of Mikhailovsky Palace represents a part of this collection, the most valuable works of XII-XVII centuries created in the major art centers of Old Russia: Novgorod, Pskov, Vladimir, Suzdal, Moscow, and Yaroslavl.
Russian Art of the XVIII Century

The exposition of Russian art of XVIII century is chronologically organized and presents the main stages and trends of Russian art of this time. One part of the display is dedicated to the time of Peter I and focuses mainly on the names of Ivan Nikitin and Andrei Matveyev, the greatest portraitists and leaders of the secular Russian art of this time. Genre of portrait of the middle and second part of XVIII century is presented by such artists as Ivan Vishyakov, Alexey Antropov, Ivan Argunov, Fyodor Rokotov.
Russian Art of the First Half of the XIX Century

The exhibition shows masterpieces representing the variety of trends in the Russian art of the time (classicism, romantism and beginning in the second third of the XIX century realism). The works by academic school masters are also widely represented: the canvases by Karl Brullov (the famous «The Last Days of Pompeii», religious compositions and portraits of the artist’s contemporaries), historical paintings by Grigory Ugryumov, Alexander Ivanov, Alexey Egorov, Fyodor Bruni.

The exhibition presents the development of a variety of realistic tradition in the works of contemporary Russian artists working on the brink of academic, photorealism, and other variations of this movement that emerged in the last decades of the twentieth century. The exposition consists of the works of famous, mostly young painters and graphic artists of St. Petersburg and Moscow (Alexey Belyaev-Gintovt Ekaterina Grachev Vadim Grigoriev-Bashun Alexander Dashevsky, Frol Ivanov Denis Ichitovkin, Taisiya Korotkov, Cyril Koteshov Olga Osnach Paul separately Catherine Igor Pestov Vladimir Potapov Vitaly Pushnitskii, Kerim Ragimov, Hamid Savkuev Victor Safonkin Maria Safronova, Mikhail Khazin, and others).

The exhibition dedicated to the 200th anniversary of Pavel Fedotov (1815-1852) - one of the most prominent Russian artists of the XIXth century includes around 40 paintings and over 100 graphic works from the collection of the State Russian Museum, State Tretyakov Gallery, State Historical Museum and Ivanovo Regional Art Museum, and also the costumes of the midth of the 19th century from the collection of the Alexandrinsky Theatre.

The exhibition includes the pieces of art that fulfilled the collection of the State Russian museum in 1998 (the last exhibition of the new acquisitions) - 2014. In this period the museum was able to purchase more than 2 000 objects of different genres and trends among which there are plenty of masterpieces. At the same time the main source of fulfilling the collection were the numerous and lavish gifts which presented to the museum over 12 000 pieces of art.
Permanent exhibition
On 26 May 2005 the Mineral Study in the Stroganov Palace was opened after restoration and recreation of interiors. The study was designed by Andrei Voronikhin in 1791-92. It was considered as one of the masterpieces of Russian architecture of the 18th century.

The exhibition is dedicated to a hundred-year-old tradition of producing decorative “military plates” depicting imperial army uniforms. Besides plates, the exhibition includes drawings and lithographs that served as sources or preliminary studies for paintings by such famous artists of the “uniform” genre.

Taming the Chaos, a solo exhibition of the work of Igor Tcholaria, numbers some 60 paintings, graphic artworks and sculptures. Igor Tcholaria was born in Abkhazia, which stretches along the coast of the Black Sea. He received his basic grounding in art at the Sukhumi Art School, and subsequently continued his education in Leningrad, at the Vera Mukhina School and the Academy of Arts.
