Russian Art of the Second Half of the XIX Century
Permanent exhibition
Even when it first opened back in 1898, the Russian Museum owned many canvases painted by such masters of the second half of the nineteenth century as Ivan Aivazovsky, Konstantin Makovsky, Ilya Repin, Vasily Polenov and Vasily Surikov. Although the selection of works before the revolution was often hampered by the conservative tastes of museum officialdom, the collection nevertheless grew in breadth thanks to the efforts of Alexander Benois, Albert Benois, Igor Grabar and Pyotr Neradovsky.
Mstislav Farmakovsky. 150th Anniversary of the Artist’s Birth

The exhibition is dedicated to the 150th anniversary of Mstislav Farmakovsky, an artist and chief curator at the State Russian Museum. The show opens up the art of this brilliant master of the Silver Age for the first time ever and pays tribute to the memory of the Russian Museum's outstanding employee.

Maxim Vorobyov (1787–1855) is the greatest master of the national landscape school of the first half of the 19th century. The exhibition features drawings and watercolours by the artist and his students including Sokrat Vorobyov (1817–1888), Mikhail Lebedev (1811–1837), Vasily Sternberg (1818–1845), Mikhail Elson (1816–1857), Nikanor Chernetsov (1805–1879), Vasily Sadovnikov (1800–1879).
We Never Forget! On the 80th Anniversary of Complete Liberation of Leningrad from the Nazi Siege

Unique in its scope and diversity of genres, the exhibition is dedicated to the heroic feat of Leningrad defenders and residents during the siege. The exhibition includes over 200 works of painting, graphic art and sculpture, mainly created in the besieged Leningrad and shown for the first time.
Vasily Surikov. 175th Anniversary of the Artist's Birth

This grandiose exhibition of the celebrated painter Vasily Surikov (1848–1916) is timed to coincide with the 175th anniversary of his birth. The exhibition presents over 120 paintings and graphic works by Surikov from the museums in St Petersburg, Moscow and Krasnoyarsk, including the famous historical paintings Yermak Conquering Siberia, Taking a Snow Town, Suvorov Crossing the Alps, Stepan Razin, Boyarynya Morozova (Tretyakov Gallery) and Menshikov in Beryozovo (Tretyakov Gallery), portraits, paintings on religious subjects, watercolours and fine examples of book illustrations.
Boris Ermolayev. 120th Anniversary of the Artist’s Birth

The exhibition celebrating 120 years since Ermolayev’s birth features his 1930s works, in which he immortalized the streets of his native Volodarsky (now Nevsky) district and the daily life and recreational activities of the people of Leningrad’s outskirts.

This exhibition celebrates 150 years since the birth of Konstantin Fyodorovich Bogayevsky (1872–1943), one of the most prominent artists of Russia’s Silver Age. A pupil of Ivan Aivazovsky, Ivan Shishkin and Arkhip Kuindzhi, Bogayevsky graduated from the Imperial Academy of Arts in 1897, commencing his career at a crucial juncture in the history of Russian art.
