Ancient Art of XIV-XVII Centuries
Permanent exhibition
Collection of the Old Russian painting of the Russian Museum is one of the largest and most significant in Russia. It includes around six thousand icons. The permanent exhibition housed in the first four halls of Mikhailovsky Palace represents a part of this collection, the most valuable works of XII-XVII centuries created in the major art centers of Old Russia: Novgorod, Pskov, Vladimir, Suzdal, Moscow, and Yaroslavl.
Russian Art of the XVIII Century

The exposition of Russian art of XVIII century is chronologically organized and presents the main stages and trends of Russian art of this time. One part of the display is dedicated to the time of Peter I and focuses mainly on the names of Ivan Nikitin and Andrei Matveyev, the greatest portraitists and leaders of the secular Russian art of this time. Genre of portrait of the middle and second part of XVIII century is presented by such artists as Ivan Vishyakov, Alexey Antropov, Ivan Argunov, Fyodor Rokotov.
Russian Art of the First Half of the XIX Century
Permanent exhibition
The exhibition shows masterpieces representing the variety of trends in the Russian art of the time (classicism, romantism and beginning in the second third of the XIX century realism). The works by academic school masters are also widely represented: the canvases by Karl Brullov (the famous «The Last Days of Pompeii», religious compositions and portraits of the artist’s contemporaries), historical paintings by Grigory Ugryumov, Alexander Ivanov, Alexey Egorov, Fyodor Bruni.

The collection of the museum comprises works of the representatives of large schools that existed in Soviet times (e.g., Leningrad school of landscape painting of the 1930s - 1950s). The art of socialist realism, showing high artistic merit, clarity of plot, a tendency for "grand style", is reflected in the paintings by A.A. Deyneka, A.N. Samokhvalov, A.A. Plastov, Yu.I. Pimenov and many other Soviet artists who continued to work during the Great Patriotic War and in the second half of the XX century.

The exhibition dedicated to the 165th anniversary of Mikhail Aleksandrovich Vrubel (1856-1910) will present the main stages of the path of one of the leading masters of Russian art. Like the titans of the Renaissance, the artist was richly gifted. His creative pursuits and achievements were far ahead of his time. Portraits of contemporaries and landscapes created by him, works inspired by Russian and ancient mythology and classical literature, are marked by high spirituality.
Vladimir Vasilkovsky. To the 100th Birth Anniversary

The exhibition is dedicated to the centenary of the birth of Vladimir Sergeevich Vasilkovsky (1921-2002), an outstanding figure of St. Petersburg culture. He left an impressive mark in the urban environment: modern St. Petersburg cannot be imagined without the buildings and bridges designed by Vasilkovsky. One of the facets of the master's work will be shown in the exhibition - his graphics and ceramics.

A Photographic Perspective on St. Petersburg

The exhibition completes the contest organized in cooperation with the Professional Photocenter Foto-One. Photographers were offered to show their view on St. Petersburg without any limitations in technique, genre, or style. The professional jury chose 97 works inspired by this unique city. Each and every photographer participating in the exhibition has his own, real and magical image of St. Petersburg.

The F.M.Dostoevsky Literary-Memorial Museum presents an exhibition to the 200th anniversary of the writer.
The exhibition is based on paintings from the imaginary "ideal museum of the writer", which were especially significant for Dostoevsky throughout his life. He did not miss a single exhibition in St. Petersburg, in Europe he got acquainted with the main museums and galleries, he knew the Dresden Gallery, the Pitti Palace, the Uffizi almost by heart. He considered Raphael's Sistine Madonna one of the greatest masterpieces, admired the landscapes of Claude Lorrain, the gates of the Florentine Baptistery, Saint Agatha by Sebastiano del Piombo, Penitent Magdalene by Batoni, this list is pretty extensive.
On the history of the St. Michael’s castle

St. Michael’s Castle is an outstanding monument of history and architecture of the turn of the 18th - 19th centuries. The building, erected at the will and under the direct supervision of Emperor Pavel I, had a difficult fate. The exposition "On the history of the St. Michael’s Castle", which is offered to the attention of visitors, makes it possible to see the research of the monument building, restoration and museification being carried out.

The exhibition was prepared for the 200th anniversary of one of the most famous and frequently cited Russian writers - Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoevsky (1821-1881).
His training at the Engineering School (in the 1840s), located in the Mikhailovsky (Engineering) Castle (now a branch of the Russian Museum), is an excellent occasion for the Russian Museum to pay tribute to the memory of one of the authors of the Petersburg myth by presenting an exposition of works from the museum collection in honor of this anniversary.
