The Albertina is devoting a major presentation to the diverse range of art from that era: 130 masterpieces by Mikhail Larionov, Natalia Goncharova, Kazimir Malevich, Wassily Kandinsky, and Marc Chagall illustrate fundamentally different styles and their dynamic development from primitivism to cubo-futurism and on to suprematism, as well the chronological parallels between figurative expressionism and pure abstraction.
In eleven chapters, Chagall to Malevich traces the brief epoch of the Russian avant-garde as a climactic drama stemming from the diversity of avant-garde movements that were diametrically opposed to one another. Enabling the public to see and experience the visual tensions inherent in this heroic phase of Russian art is the stated goal of this exhibition.
The exhibition is a cooperation of the Albertina, Vienna and the State Russian Museum, Saint Petersburg.

Viktor Vasnetsov. 175th Anniversary of the Artist’s Birth

The retrospective anniversary exhibition exhibition brings together about 120 Vasnetsov’s works from the collections of the leading Russian museums, including the State Russian Museum, the State Tretyakov Gallery, the Viktor Vasnetsov House Museum, the Viktor and Apollinary Vasnetsov Art Museum of Vyatka, the Nizhny Novgorod State Art Museum, the Abramtsevo State History, Art and Literary Museum and Reserve, the Vasily Polenov Fine Arts Museum and National Park, the State Museum of the History of Religion, etc.
Karl the Great. 225th Anniversary of the Artist’s Birth

The anniversary exhibition of “Karl the Great”. Karl Brullov needs no special introduction. He was the only Russian classical artist of the 19th century who gained fame in Europe in his lifetime and worldwide recognition after his death. He certainly had natural gift for painting. Moreover, he was a highly qualified professional of brilliant and fascinating personality. Only Brullov was honoured with a kind of title “Karl the Great” that showed the appreciation and admiration of his colleagues, art connoisseurs, and students during his lifetime.
